Brothers in Arms
Placing his pipe in his mouth, Gradock inhaled deeply. His steely eyes scanned the foot of the hill, watching for movement.
Morris stepped up beside him, hefting his pick onto his shoulder. “Any sign of any goblins?” he whispered.
Gradock exhaled smoke and muttered, “Not yet. I reckon they know the moonstones are there though.”
The sun sank beneath the hill behind them, the warmth on their backs giving way to a cool summer’s evening.
“Evening lads,” Young Jack called as he strode up the hill, “I’ve got some teacakes for you!”
Moris spun, pressing his finger to his lips.
Wincing Jack whispered, “Sorry, should I be quiet?”
“Yoooooooung Jaaaaaack!”
Moris nodded, but eagerly took the teacake from Jack’s hand.
“What’re you looking for?” Jack whispered to Gradock.
“Goblins.”
“Oh…”
“Mmpf.”
“They down there?”
“Aye.”
“Well… Nothing for it then,” Jack hefted his sword in the air, “begone ye foul things!” He sprinted full-tilt down the other side of the hill.
“Jack!” Moris called, setting off down the hill.
Sighing Gradock watched the sprinting gnomes, then rubbed his temple and stomped after them.
